Year of the Bey.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, on Friday Dec.13 Beyonce released her long awaited fifth studio album, simply titled ‘Beyonce’. It’s described as a visual album and includes 14 songs and 17 videos.

What’s so amazing about this release is that she was able to keep it a secret!! There was no promotion for the album at all!!! No interviews, no sneak peek album cover, no cryptic Twitter/Instagram messages, NOTHING! Even the people involved with the album or videos didn’t say anything. For this reason, and more, is why I believe Beyonce is having the best year EVER!

In January, Beyonce sang the national anthem at President Obama’s second inauguration and after 234567 years, we were blessed with new music from Destiny’s Child. The trio released an album titled Love Songs that featured some DC3 classics but also featured a new song— “Nuclear”.

In February, Bey shut the Super Bowl down with her half time performance which resulted in a power outage. It’s like she literally gathered all of the energy from that building and used it to perform a phenomenal halftime show. I’m not mad at you, girl! That same night, she announced that she would be going on world tour— The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. The next week “Love on Top”, from her fourth studio album, won her a well deserved Grammy. By Feb. 16, she was sitting down with Auntie Oprah for an interview that shed light on her life and the many hats  crowns she wears daily. Following that interview, her documentary Life is But a Dream aired on HBO.

By April, she began her world tour and was also featured in H&M’s 2013 Summer Collection ads.The
following month, Bey voiced a character in the movie Epic, and also covered Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” with Andre 3000 for The Great Gatsby Soundtrack.

Over the next few months, while still on tour, Beyonce was featured on numerous albums from Talk a Good Game(Kelly Rowland), 4 Play (The Dream) and MCHG (Jay-Z).  The Creole Princess even won an Emmy for her light design in her Super Bowl performance, in November!

And of course, on Dec. 13 (recognized as Black Girl Slayage Day… in my head) she broke the internet and surprised the world by releasing her fifth studio album on iTunes.

Below is a video of Crissle’s reaction to hearing about the surprise release, and it is almost EXACTLY how I reacted. Lol

It was recently announced that the album was #1 in 100 countries in just three days AND she had the fastest selling album in iTunes history!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, I don’t know what I love more about this woman— her body of work or her work ethic! Mama goes hard in everything she does and it’s very admirable. I only hope to be half as driven in my work as she is in hers. But I know when you’re passionate about something, your drive is definitely on 1000! So thank you, Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter for giving us the best year of unexpected greatness! And in case you forgot,
