Like many twenty-somethings today, I frequently reminisce about the good old days of the 90’s. It was a simple time filled with the best of music and TV.
With shows like “Boy Meets World” filming a spin off series and talks of “Moesha” returning, it seems like 2014 is the year of the comeback. I only ask the powers that be to please bring back “A Different World”! Or, at least release seasons 2-6 on DVD because we’ve been patiently waiting.
It’s no secret that fans want the show to return. There’s even someone selling Hillman apparel and a change.org petition to get the DVD’s released.
I’m amazed at how over 25 years have passed since the show has aired, but the topics are still relevant. In its six seasons “A Different World” managed to touch on topics including domestic violence, HIV/AIDS and race to name a few. Not only that, but there were guest appearances from Lena Horne, Patti LaBelle, Diahann Carroll, Tupac, Gladys Knight, Billy Dee Williams and countless other legends!

In 2012 during the 25th anniversary of the show, Miss Debbie Allen even tweeted about revisiting the “wonder arena” we know as Hillman.
We need to revisit this wonder arena and get my crew back.Whitley,Dwayne,Ron,Kim,Jaleesa,Mr. Gaines,Freddie

If no one else says it I’m here to say that we’re ready, Miss Debbie! Seriously, what better time to bring America’s favorite fictional HBCU (Historically Black College/University) back, than in 2014?
I saw a post on Tumblr a few months ago about how Dwayne and Whitley’s child should be starting college this year. I would love to see the personalities of everybody’s kids, the success of Miss Kimberly Reese and the love between everyone’s favorite couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne.
The old cast could reunite at their alma mater when dropping their kids off to Hillman, Mr. Gaines’ son Darnell could run The Pit (R.I.P. Lou Meyers), and maybe a few of the cast members who were added later on, like Gina or Charmaine, could work on campus? Lol I don’t know, but as you can see I’ve thought about this before.
"A Different World" had a pretty phenomenal impact on Black Americans! It inspired so many young people to consider attending HBCU’s, inspired the fashion choices of some (I think my cousin still has those glasses Dwayne wore), and educated its viewers.
Although I didn’t attend an HBCU, (I wanted to attend my mom’s alma mater Clark Atlanta, but I lived out of state. WOMP!) the show taught me so much about college and it taught me to be driven like Kim, know my worth like Whitley, be passionate like Freddie, and hopefully find an intelligent, humorous, caring guy like Pookie Dwayne.
They say if you speak it into existence, it shall be done; so I’m claiming that we will see an updated version of the show in the near future. Until then, I’ll be living vicariously through the students of Hillman College on my TV.
